Battle of Edgehill: 1642

A DBR scenario game. The Battle of Edgehill 1642, the first large engagement of the English Civil War, aka the Great Rebellion. It is basically a straight up battle between two very similar armies. The Royalists have the edge in cavalry and the Parliamentarians have the edge in infantry. A wrinkle to simulate the unpredictable quality of the troops at this early stage of the war is that no one will know the quality of the individual elements until they participate in combat. Then the quality (Inferior, Ordinary, or Superior) will be determined randomly with the Royalist cavalry and the Parliamentarian infantry being favored to be superior.

I based the troop levels, division into sub-commands, initial dispositions, map of the battle field, etc. on Peter Young's book Edgehill 1642 currently available from Windrush.

For the ratio between Pk and Sh I was guided by the DBR army list. I included some Hd as the king had trouble arming all of his men and his army included a contingent with improvised weapons. I left out the possibility that the Pi could be Fast as in the army list. I could see no simple way to fairly include such a possibility.

For the ratio between Pk and Sh I was guided by the DBR army list. They knew their cavalry was badly outnumbered and dispatched some musketeers off to support one cavalry wing.

Scenario Rules

Besides the generals and artillery all troop types are unknown at the start of the game. Note that the none of the artillery has attached draught teams. Treat all other elements as Ordinary until they have to roll a combat or distant shooting die. Before the combat roll a d6. On a 1-2 then the element is Inferior, 3-4 Ordinary, 5-6 Superior. Make one roll for the element fighting or shooting plus supporters and apply the results to all of them. Inferior Hd fight at +1. Mark them with yellow for Inferior and Red for Superior. Exceptions for Royalist Pi and Dr and Parliamentarian Pk and Sh which are Inferior on 1, Ordinary 2-3, Superior 4-6. Once the classification has been determined then keep it fixed for rest of the game. Even if a Pi becomes a Pi(S) it will still count as 1 ME, simply to avoid unnecessary complication.

Edgehill Map

Map is 12 by 6 feet (Bob's big table). Parlimentarians set up at the top, within one and a half feet of the long edge and more than one foot from the short edges. Royalists set up on the bottom within one and a half feet of the long edge and more than one foot from the short edges. Parlimenatarians set up largest command first, followed by the Royalist largest command, etc. Royalist move first.
